I completed my M.Sc. degree in Physics at the IASBS (Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Sciences) in Zanjan/ Iran. My thesis focused on the effects of spike-timing dependent plasticity (STDP) on the dynamics and structure of heterogeneous networks. The networks consisted of integrate-and-fire neurons with heterogeneous intrinsic oscillatory frequencies. I showed that STDP strengthened those synapses where the pre-synaptic neurons had a high intrinsic frequency and weakened those synapses where the pre-synaptic neurons had a low intrinsic frequency. Asymmetric connections are formed with an average flow from high frequency to low frequency neurons which eventually introduce high frequency neurons as the more influential elements in the network.
Based on the CRISP theory (Sen Cheng, Front. Neural Circuits, 7:88), the new project aim to study the hippocampal function in episodic memory. We will try to implement the CRISP theory in neural networks and address the problem of storing and retrieving different neural sequences (episodic memory) in of cortico-hippocampal networks.
